When Virgil Abloh meets Louis Vuitton
When Kim Jones, the new creative director of Dior Menswear Department, announced that he was leaving Louis Vuitton, everyone was speculating who was going to be his successor. Virgil Abloh was one of the names mentioned. Abloh is a busy man. He entered the fashion world as creative director for Kanye West, and since then, he has got the attention of the world. He launched his own label, Off-White. The street wear brand rocked the fashion world with the idea of “Couture for Streetwear.” In March 2018, a designer’s wildest dream became his reality. Louis Vuitton announced him as the new creative director of its Menswear Department.
Virgil Abloh showcased his first collection for Louis Vuitton at Paris Fashion Week.
Among the guests, there were arts students invited by Virgil Abloh himself to see the show. With this gesture, Abloh demonstrated his democratic approach which helped him win over the crowd.
Kid Cudi, Dev Hynes, Blondey McCoy and many others walked down the catwalk. This decision was a way to tell the world that Louis Vuitton Menswear will be younger and more dynamic.
From the first moment Virgil Abloh presented his own brand Off-White, his motto was to change the meaning of luxury. He realized this idea in his first-ever collection in the French fashion house. He took the concept of luxury and made a new statement about it. There were many inspirations behind this collection including slavery and racism.
It was an emotional scene after the collection when the designer came to the runway to salute the crowd. It was Kanye West who has always collaborated with and supported Virgil Abloh from a young age. They had an intimate eye contact and later hugged and shared some tears.
