Challenging the Media’s Description of the “Classical Asian Woman”

Australian curator Sophia Cai’s works challenges the cultural stereotypes about being a woman in East Asia with surreal images.

Resisting expectations at the junction of race, gender and sexuality, the exhibition “Disobedient Daughters” challenges rigid narratives that still dominate the misrepresentation of Asian women in mainstream media.

Comprising nine Asian female artists, the exhibition “Disobedient Daughters” feeds on the motivation to break the cultural stereotypes which regard Asian women as obedient and fetishize them as objects of sexual desire. Bringing a new dimension to the objectification of Asian women, we take a look at New York-based Metro Arts gallery to explore the exhibition.
