Melting Memories: Refik Anadol
Refik Anadol’s mesmerizing interaction with technology laden with memories takes us on a journey into the limits of our brain.
Going through this experimental journey into the subconscious, conscious and overconscious layers, we find ourselves thinking about things we never cared about before. Anadol believes that the question “What are memories and what do they tell us?” – which has been asked by the philosophy of art since the 20th century – has evolved into “What can we do with memories?” when blended with technology.
Memories are our most personal data, and, deriving from the idea to turn our brain’s motion when interacting with a memory into algorithms via brainwave sensor used at the neurology labs in University of California, Refik Anadol decided to use the process of remembering by transforming all kinds of data into an image in his art. The most admirable thing about Anadol is how he stands at the junction of technology, art and science, and how well he knows to bring them together.
Emphasizing that his creative process was influenced by René Descartes’s arguments on perception, medical studies on neurological diseases, and the movie “Blade Runner 2049” released last year, Anadol takes the audience on a journey towards memories while preserving individual creativity.
Most of the works displayed in this exhibition offer an interactive experience thanks to light and projections on LED screens. “Melting Memories” is also the artist’s second solo gallery exhibition after Anadol’s exhibition at Pilevneli Project in 2012. The exhibition can be visited at PİLEVNELİ between February 7 and March 10.
