Frieze Art Fair as one of the world’s most prestigious art fair includes nearly 200 galleries’ exhibitions from 26 countries took place in New York, Randall’s Island this year. For the Spotlight section, there are 33 galleries and 3 of them are from Turkey.
Frieze Art Fair which took place between 2 – 5 May is known as a fair that brings together new and under-represented artists alongside the most significant names in contemporary art. It has driven significant sales and acquisitions by major institutions and collectors across a wide range of price points and in Spotlight section features positions beyond the Western tradition, surveys of under-recognized artists and rarely seen work by iconic figures of the avant-garde with 3 galleries from Turkey: Galerist, Galeri Nev and Pi Artworks.
Spotlight section’s curator Laura Hoptman’s intention was having ground-breaking figures inspired by spirituality and ancient with the aim of showcasing remarkable artworks by artists with fascinating histories and urgent stories to tell. Galerist/Galeri Nev has invited this section with the works of Yüksel Arslan which can be seen the influence of Eastern miniatures and Anatolian folklore figures with Surrealist movement.
PiArtworks attends the fair with German-Egyptian artist Susan Hefuna’s works which are described as ‘can be seen sensuality in the drawings’ by Laura Hoptman. She is also known for her drawing, which she considers the backbone of her diverse practice and helps her to explore the rifts between cultural codes and perceptions of them, towards larger themes of identity and social politics.
Launch of Frieze Sculpture at Rockefeller Center which is open through end of June, free to all, and features many artists such as Joan Miro, Paulo Nazareth, Hank Willis Thomas and Rochelle Goldberg presenting public sculpture in New York.
