THE MOST STYLISH MOVIES IN THE 50’S

Suburban growth, stereotypical families, increasing consumerism, Rock’n Roll attitude… These are the prominent changes during 50’s. As the society effected art movements. Cinema took its share from these changes as well. Since it was an era which censorship and the lagging societal constraint on sex, movie sector aimed to break this taboo and focused especially on women sexuality and rebellion. While names like Marilyn Monroe, Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn, Sofia Loren had their breakthroughs, actors like Humphrey Bogart, Donald O’Connor, Gene Kelly was dashing with their styles.

It is not possible to forget the scene where Gene Kelly walks and dances under the rain in ‘Singin in the Rain’, and of course its soundtracks. ‘Funny Face’ melts hearts with the romance and comedy in between Audrey Hepburn and Fred Astaire, and it makes you feel like you are walking on the fabulous streets of Paris. One of the era’s detective films Hitchcook’s ‘Rear Window’ which brings James Stewart, Wendell Corey and Grace Kelly together. In ‘High Society’ Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra and Grace Kelly are the leads and Sinatra glamorizes with his voice. Movies in the 50’s and they are representing the era’s fashion trends. Elegant stylings with blazer jackets, button-down shirts, chino pants, fedora hats, loafers which are supporting the 50’s trends in every scene.

As art and fashion is influencing each other all the time, cinema would be the field that turns into a runway. Not only with the scenes but yet it’s stylings, movies… And there are the things kept this era alive!
