Aporias

‘Aporias/Aporiler’ is an exhibition that consists of twelve artists from Serbia, Austria, Portugal, Slovakia, Spain and Turkey who search ways to reflect upon this term within their own artistic practice; managed by a Vienna Finer Arts Academy collective, the exhibition will take place at Friday Exit Art Gallery between June 3-18.

The exhibition will be curated by Deniz Güvensoy and the artists include; Žarko Aleksić, Martinka Bobrikova & Oscar de Carmen, Deniz Beşer, Irfan Dönmez, Pınar Doğan, Berna Karaçalı, Sara Lanner, Serenay Şahin, Meliha Sözeri, Maria Trabulo and Anna Watzinger.

Aporia,’ a Greek term which means a ‘barred passage’, indicates a feeling of getting stuck, puzzlement, insolubility and undecidability when confronting a philosophical question.

The exhibition questions the stability of distinctions which are necessary for identity construction and it searches how Aporias can be represented visually. Various artworks of painting, installation, digital print, video, sculpture and more underline both the similarities and the differences between cultures. The main focus of the exhibition is aporias that are born out of conceptual determinations, lines between the definiteion of concept and meaning, the limits of the body and gender, limits of language, borderlines between countries and regions, and im/possibility of translation.
